Caritas Ghana Participates In Ethical Artificial Intelligence Workshop
John Oheneba-AcquahRepresentatives from various Diocesan Departments of Social Communication (DEPSOCOM) across Ghana and Caritas Ghana participated in a four-day workshop on Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) organized by the EAiD (Ethical Artificial Intelligence for Human Development) in Accra from 19th to 22nd May 2026, at the Conference Hall of the National Catholic Secretariat. The workshop, organized by the Department of Social Communication of the National Catholic Secretariat under the auspices of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, facilitated by Mr. Luca Baraldi and Ms. Maria Amparo Alonso Escobar, sought to deepen participants’ understanding of Artificial Intelligence, its ethical use and implications for Catholic institutions and development work.
The sessions explored key themes including the fundamentals and “ABC” of AI, the invisible presence of AI in everyday life, data ethics, bias and privacy concerns, the impact of AI on human rights, and the growing influence of AI in global geopolitics. Participants also reflected on institutional ethical principles that should guide Catholic entities in the responsible use of AI, especially in promoting human dignity, justice, inclusion, and the common good.
A practical session on AI tools and prompt engineering equipped participants with hands-on skills for integrating ethical AI solutions into communication and development initiatives within the Church. The workshop concluded with a participatory dialogue on why Catholic institutions must actively engage in shaping responsible AI development and ethical discourse globally.
The training highlighted the urgent need for faith-based institutions to become informed and proactive actors in the digital age, ensuring that emerging technologies remain human-centered and aligned with Gospel values and Catholic Social Teaching.
To conclude the workshop, both the Secretary General of the National Catholic Secretariat, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Kwasi Adjei, Esq. and the Executive Director of DEPSOCOM (National), Rev. Fr. Dieu Donne Davor, thanked the facilitators for their impressive knowledge sharing, the participants for their meaningful participation in the workshop and finally, thanked the Bishops’ Conference for sponsoring the workshop.
