The Family in Catholic Social Teaching
As the world celebrates the International Day of Families, Caritas Ghana highlights the family as the foundation of society, the first school of faith and values, and a sacred institution created by God. Catholic Social Teaching teaches that strong families help build peaceful and responsible communities.
What Catholic Social Teaching Says About the Family
1. The Family Is the Foundation of Society
The family is the basic unit of society where love, respect, responsibility, and human values are first learned. The Church teaches that governments and communities must support families because society depends on their well-being.

2. The Family Is the Domestic Church
The family is the first place where prayer, faith, forgiveness, and Christian values are taught. Parents are recognized as the first teachers of faith and morality.

Every member of the family possesses dignity because all are created in God’s image. Families are therefore called to be places of love, protection, respect, and care.

Message from Caritas Ghana
On this International Day of Families, Caritas Ghana encourages families, communities, faith leaders, and policymakers to strengthen family bonds, protect vulnerable persons, and promote homes built on love, peace, prayer, and mutual respect.
Despite economic hardship, migration, climate challenges, and social instability, the family remains a source of hope, unity, and human development.
