AGAVEDZI, SALAKOPE AND AMUTSINU IN THE KETU SOUTH MUNICIPALITY DEVASTATED BY TIDAL WAVES

Recent destructive tidal waves hit the coastal communities of Agavedzi, Salakope and Amutsinu in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region of Ghana. As always, the tidal waves left in its trail destroyed homes, displaced households, vandalized graves, and roads partially destroyed by the seawater. Besides, access to some social services has been disrupted.

Initial report had 106 households affected in Salakope and Amutsinu, whilst Agavedzi had 51 households. Socio-economically, these communities have been severely affected.

Government, led by the President, donates relief items to the affected households.

The Government, through the Regional Minister and the Members of Parliament for the constituencies within the Ketu South Municipality, has donated relief items to the affected and displaced people. The Church, other benevolent Ghanaians and entities have also rendered their support. As usual, they are inadequate.

There is the outcry for the Government to expedite actions: to provide safe havens (adequate shelter, security and resources/services) to the affected and displaced families so they could rebuild their lives, and to design and develop a long-term solution to the coastal erosion.

In the spirit of solidarity, Caritas Ghana, the charity arm of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, is calling on all well-wishers, friends, corporate world and corporate business entities to, humbly and urgently, come to the aid of the people of Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutsinu and other adjoining coastal communities.
